Hole in the Hedge

One afternoon Daniel came to me so excited about finding a hole in the hedge. He had poked his hand through and the people who live behind us saw it and shouted 'I just saw a hand in the hedge!' He came running down to me and said that he wanted to write a letter to put through the hedge. I didn't know if it would work but was proud of him for the idea.

He did some crayon rubbings on paper and then wrote a little message to them telling them who he was and a little bit about himself.

We put it into a plastic bag so that if it rained it wouldn't get wet and waited. I didn't really expect them to reply but thought it was a great idea to get to know some other neighbours and a bit of fun.

2 days later I went up to hang out the washing and saw the letter back on our grass. I thought maybe the rain had pushed it back out of the hedge. I just put it on top of the garbage bins and didn't really think twice about it. When Daniel got home from school he said he needed to check the hole in the hedge. I told him that it was on the grass so I moved it onto the bins. He went and got it and opened the letter. He saw that it had replies inside. How exciting! One of the kids who replied turned out to be a kid in Daniel's year so that was a bit exciting.

He said he is excited to write to them again and get to know them more. It hasn't happened yet but he hopefully will do it.

Carol from church was also encouraged by his way of loving his neighbours and getting to know more people. She asked if he could do a video message to put up on a church service to show how the kids are encouraging and loving our neighbours.

Although, he did write a letter asking them if they could pass back over the AFL ball that he kicked over the fence. They sent the ball back and wrote a note saying 'No problem little buddy'. Too sweet!
