Cooking with Kids

I am finding that the kitchen tends to be the place that I spend a lot of my time - making breakfast, lunch, dinner, making morning tea, afternoon tea, making snacks and treats. It isn't always my favourite place to be, but I am finding that I do like being in the kitchen and often the kids give me a bit of space when I'm there.

But lately I've been trying to have the kids help with cooking or even they will make suggestions and I help them with making it.

To start with Alexander was desperate to have some sushi. I told him that we weren't going to buy any but that he could help make some. So that's what we did.

He stirred the rice after I had cooked it.

I helped him scoop it out and spread it out on the nori. Then he put on tuna,

avocado, carrot and cucumber.

He rolled up the nori

added some water to the top to help seal it

and then closed it up.

We cut the sushi and he was very proud of his efforts.

It was very tasty! He made around 6 more rolls and then told me that I could do the rest. Fair call buddy. It does take a long time to make them. But it was fun doing it with him.

I also introduced Alexander to hot milos. As I drank it I had so many memories of camps.

Eliza brought home from school a cookbook. She was so excited to make some recipes from it. When I read the front cover I wasn't so sure how many recipes we could make... it was a Vegan cookbook and we aren't vegan. Flicking through the pages I noticed that we didn't have many options, but I did come across a 'Chia crepes with caramelised banana and black sesame' recipe that I thought we could adapt. Eliza was excited. She helped mix the ingredients and cooked the crepes on the stove.

Instead of making the caramelised bananas we put fresh fruit on top (chopped bananas and blueberries) and also a drizzle of maple syrup. They were really tasty.

The next one isn't a recipe the kids helped cook but one that they really enjoyed and I am excited to have found. It's a recipe for scrolls. To make the dough you just mix 1.5 cups of self raising flour with 1 cup of yoghurt. Then roll it out and fill it with whatever topping. The ones that I tried were:

-vegemite and cheese

-pizza (pizza sauce, chopped pineapple and ham)

-apple and cinnamon (with brown sugar)

You then roll the dough up, cut it into 1cm pieces and cook them on a baking tray. They are so tasty! Definitely a keeper of a recipe.

I wonder what will be next...
