With Christmas time comes presents and the need to wrap them with wrapping paper. Daniel a few weeks ago asked if they could do some more potato stamping for wrapping paper and throughout the year Eliza had asked if they could do some more Jackson Pollock painting so I decided today would be the day for messy paint.
The wind wasn't the most helpful in setting up but fortunately it did settle down a little bit. I stuck down large sheets of paper on unfolded cardboard boxes and the kids set to work with Christmas colours. They each had their own piece of paper to decorate. They loved the splashing of the paint just like they did last time.
Daniel enjoyed doing the art again with the splatting.
Eliza was very focussed with her painting and, like last time, she loved 'accidentally' painting her feet.
James and I then came up with a Christmas gift idea for the kids to make. I had some small canvases in the cupboard that I have had sitting there for years. I thought it would look effective for the kids to do splatter painting on them for us to give to Nana J, Nana and Poppy, the Howies and Auntie Sue. James then had the idea of putting a Christmas tree template on it so that part would be white with the paint around it. I cut a tree out of cardboard and then bluetaced it onto the canvas. Then I let the kids go to work. They each got to choose a colour to apply to it so they each added to each present.
The finished piece looked awesome!
The kids then repeated it 4 times.
They moved from just one person painting at a time to all 3 painting at the same time. It was messy and they loved it! It was so nice to see them working together.
They made a game out of it so they would splat the paint together. The wind also picked up and blew over the pieces of cardboard (not so helpful but the kids found it quite funny!)
There were 2 more pieces of paper that needed to be painted. They each wanted to do one so I encouraged them to do them together. They were so cute and started to side skip and sing as the danced around the paper, splatting as they went. It was a very joyful time!
The finished canvases looked awesome! (and they were well received at Christmas time too).
This time around each of the kids were quite rainbow by the end of their painting time.
Next up was the potato stamping wrapping paper. Much less messy but still a lot of fun! As I only had 2 little tables, one kid made their own paper and the other 2 had to share and then they rotated.
The paper looked so bright and colourful. It really was great to do again and I love that Daniel remembers doing it. Maybe making wrapping paper will be a tradition for the kids to do each year too. Maybe... if I can cope with the mess.
