Friday 4th February 2022 was the first day for Alexander to start school. Thursday night he went to be so very excited. He even said to me "Mum, I'm going to close my eyes so that I go to sleep faster. Normally I just lie there and my eyes close on their own, but tonight I'm going to help them close faster". That was a bit of cute.
Friday morning he called out while I was doing my quiet time saying that he needed help with buttoning up his shirt. I told him to come to me and said that he knew how to do buttons. He told me "I know I do, but I can normally see the other side of the buttons." I giggled and showed him the magic of school shirts that they have a piece of material over the button holes to make it look neater. He was surprised, said "Wow!" and then proceeded to do up his buttons on his own.
We walked up to school altogether. Daniel and Eliza even walked in the gate with us too. I was so grateful that we were able to go onto the school grounds to take Alexander in for his first day of Kindy. They had set up a red carpet at the front gate which the families could walk along. Daniel went straight in and off. Eliza gave us a million cuddles then headed off to put her bag down and then promptly returned.
They had a table set up for the tea and tissues bags (minus the morning tea because of Covid). We collected our bag then headed over to the frame that they had created to get a cute photo of our big boy on his first day of school. Dylan was there too so we got a happy photo of the boys together and then Flynnie arrived with Anne and we got one of the 3 boys together. We saw lots of other faces that we recognised but didn't get to say hi to. It was really lovely spotting many familiar faces.
He then went over to Mrs Granville who took him to his classroom and James and I headed back home. He went off so confidently, so excited and keen for the day. It really made me feel at peace and excited for him starting school. He is going to love learning!
During the day I did some cleaning, went and packed Mainly Music bags for the term and then headed out for a lovely lunch with Anne and Louise to celebrate our babies heading off to school. It was so nice just sitting and chatting at Kiplings Garage and catching up with each other. The time went all too quickly though! Our first kid free lunch during the week!
We headed back to school for pick up. I parked at Anne's place because there was only 5 mins before pick up. We headed up to the oval and it poured with rain! We were not expecting that. Sure did make it a memorable day. I spotted Alexander (who I was impressed wore his raincoat) and he came over to me. He had a gorgeous picture of his first day of school which I loved seeing. A nice touch when we won't be able to be that engaged with what is going on in the classroom. I asked him how his day was and he said "GREAT!" I asked him if he learnt anything, he said no. They just played a lot. Over the afternoon and night I heard more about what they did - they read 2 books, they went on a tour of the school, they drew a picture. Sounds like a pretty good day. We picked up Eliza and Ems. Daniel and Lachie headed to Alex's place for a playdate and Eliza and Alexander went to Anne's place for a play with Ems and Flynnie. It was a really lovely time sitting, chatting and catching up even more and the kids had really missed their playdates!
When we got home he had a FaceTime chat with Nana J, Nana and Poppy. Then a phone call with Auntie Sue followed by a FaceTime call with Auntie Jenny. He felt very loved.
A successful start to the school journey. I love that he was so happy and eager to go. I love the confidence that he showed me. I love his eagerness to learn. I can't wait to see where the learning journey is going to take Alexander. He is going to do amazing things in his life, I just feel it in my bones. I can't wait to watch and encourage him on this journey.
