Art Inspiration - Wassily Kandinsky

The next art lesson that we did was definitely not as messy! Today we learnt about Wassily Kandinsky and created a circle artwork based upon his artwork Concentric Circles.

We started by watching a video telling us 10 facts about his life.

And then we watched part of a Mr Maker episode.

The kids sort of lost interest in the facts video about his life (although Daniel still took it all in) but they did love the Mr Maker episode.

Then it was time for the kids to create. I spent the morning drawing and then cutting out some coloured squares and large and smaller circles. It was quite time consuming and I did get a bit over it (and it turns out that I had made wayyyyyyy too many circles) but it was well worth it for the artworks that the kids made.

Firstly they had to choose 6 squares for their base and then choose 6 larger circles and 6 smaller circles. The kids each made their own design and then started to glue them down.

This activity was really easy for Alexander to do and the finished product looked awesome still.

Each artwork I asked the kids to name. Alexander named this one Crocodile. He was mainly being silly with it, but it was pretty cool to try and work out why he called it that. We decided that it might have been because the circles look like crocodile's eyes.

Daniel made 2 of these artworks and Eliza made 1. Daniel then asked if he could have a go at painting the artwork. Eliza wanted to have a go too. They both did it in their own way though.

Eliza stuck down the squares like the first artwork and then painted the circles over the top.

Daniel chose to paint the squares and cirlces. He was doing it so carefully and was paying so much attention to his work. I loved seeing him take his time and be really proud of the work that he produced.

As the next day was ANZAC Day, I had the kids paint a wreath each that we could hang outside our house. They each put their own touch on the wreath.

And then they each wanted to just have some free painting. It was really cool to see what creations they came up with.
Alexander painted a picture of our family and Jesus' cross.
Daniel painted a picture of Chilli. I loved how he painted the background and filled in the white spaces.
Eliza painted Haystacks, like Monet's painting. She was inspired by this because in the Mr Maker clip, it said that Kandinsky was inspired by Monet's haystacks painting that was upside down. He realised that you could experiment with colour and shapes and it was still art. She had only seen this artwork on the video and she painted it from memory. I think it was really good!
Another successful day of art!
