Noble Family Olympics

After Alexander's week of Olympics and watching some Olympics on the TV, I decided that we would have an Olympics day on the weekend. Alexander had been working hard during the week to make torches, medals and flags for us to use. I made a program for us to follow during the day.

After online church and saying hi to a few visitors to see the art gallery we headed out the back with the Olympic Torches that had been made this week. Eliza started the relay, passing the flame onto Daniel and then Daniel onto Alexander. It was cute seeing them use their homemade torches. Alexander then lit the caldron (followed by Mummy lighting it with the matches).

Next up we entered the stadium (back to front I know but it's our Olympics so it was ok) waving hi to everyone (well no one) and waving our Australian, Aboriginal and Family Olympic flags.

Our Family Flag and the Australian Flag

Then it was onto the challenges. First up the kids had to get into their swimming costumes for the rowing. They took turns to row in the bath for 30 seconds. They had many giggles.

Next up it was swimming. I did have their swimming caps and goggles but I accidentally forgot to put them on. Oh well. The kids chose which stroke they wanted to do. Daniel did backstroke, Alexander did freestyle and Eliza did freestyle which lead to doggy paddle. Again, many giggles were had. I just loved how James got into it. He does so well with supporting me in these crazy ideas. Speaking into his hands to start the race, clapping his hands to be the starting gun. It just added to the fun of the activities.

After getting dry and dressed we move to Upstairs Stadium for our opening game of soccer. We started with Daddy verses Mummy. Daddy ended up scoring the first goal. Daniel verse Alexander was up next. Daniel was enjoying it so much he forgot a bit about sharing the goal getting but that's ok. Alexander handled it pretty well and then got to take on Eliza. This was a bit more of an even contest. Then Daddy verses Eliza was last. The kids all were great sports about this and cheered each other on.

Next up we headed outside for basketball - our first medal placing contest. We played around the world. Daniel was on fire, shooting hoops with ease. The rest of us it was more tricky but we did get there in the end.

Gold - Daniel, Silver - Daddy, Bronze - Alexander, 4th - Eliza, 5th Mummy.

Eliza was excited to do the medal presentation at the ceremony.

We then hopped onto our bikes (well I walked) and headed to Oakleigh Oval for some Athletics and Cycling events. We had the idea of riding around the roundabout in our street for cycling but I was quite nervous about the kids pushing themselves and slipping on the road, ending up with massive cuts and tears so we decided not to. Instead we did a track up at the oval. The track was to ride around the junior soccer field as quickly as you could. James took the kids for a loop of the track so that everyone was clear where they needed to go. Then each of us had a turn.

Go Eliza!!

Alexander went first, coming home in 32.59 seconds. Eliza then went next coming in at 27.59 secs. Daniel then went even faster finishing in 25.87secs. Daddy tried to not win but still was too fast coming in at 24.91 and then I had a leisurely ride around, finishing at 33.12seconds. Well done to Daddy, Daniel and Eliza being medal winners for cycling.

We then competed in discus (with a frisbee). It was a bit tricky with the wind  picking up but it was fun. I loved watching James help Alexander know how to throw it, considering Alexander had never done it before. The coaching helped as Alexander ended up winning Gold!

Gold - Alexander, Silver - Daddy, Bronze - Daniel

I loved Alexander's response when taking his medal photo

Following discus we then did some javelin, with a twist. It was rocket javelin. We had to shoot our rockets as far as we could go. The kids have gotten quite good at shooting these rockets.

Gold - Daniel, Silver - Eliza, Bronze - Alexander

We then used the rockets to do some archery. We didn't have a target (like I had planned to make) so instead we had to try and hit the y in Enjoy. The first shots of the kids were all over the place. Alexander's went up over the fence, Daniel's went through the fence. We had some giggles.

2nd go though Alexander got the closest, hitting the EE in referees. Eliza and I were a similar distance apart. The results?

Alexander's shot was the closest! It's the red blot on the poster

Gold - Alexander, Silver - Mummy and Eliza - My first medal!!

We then lined up for our athletics running race. We were running the long length of the soccer field. All 5 of us raced one way but then I realised that I had false started (not really but I wanted to get a video of the race) so the other lined up again ready to race. Alexander had a slow start but the other 3 had a good start. It was close but Eliza pushed herself and came first! She was very excited. There was a photo finish for 2nd and 3rd place but Daddy's foot was just in front of Daniel's knee.

Daddy was genuinely surprised that Eliza won
Photo finish - Daddy's foot just beat Daniel's knee
Happy faces all around

Gold - Eliza, Silver - Daddy, Bronze - Alexander

Eliza wanted her medal that she made for school

We then hopped back on the bikes and headed back home for some lunch. We quickly did the medal ceremony and then sat down to have lunch and a bit of a break.

After lunch we started with tennis (before the rain came). We played a couple of rounds of totem tennis together - many giggles when swinging and missing the ball as it swung around.

Then we did trampoline gymnastics. Each kid needed to come up with a minute long routine. Eliza had my stomach in my throat as she did multiple flips over but she did it pretty well. Alexander had a blast jumping up and down on it and Daniel included some bunny hops in his routine.

We then headed upstairs to do a Rhythmic Gymnastics  routine with the ribbon. Each kid had a minute to perform their routine. Daddy chose music for them to dance along with. It was great to watch them. They each embraced it which was great. I loved Eliza's elegance while dancing and the joy that she had too. I had a giggle when James was pretending to be a judge/commentator so turned to talk to imaginary Steve about his opinions. Of all the names he chose Steve and said it in such an Aussie accent. Daddy and Steve both decided the medal placings.

Gold - Eliza, Silver - Alexander, Bronze - Daniel

Next up we headed to Hallway Stadium for the hockey (with golf clubs). We used the air hockey nets at each end of the hallway and the challenge was 1 on 1. It was pretty tricky to play it in the hallway. Not heaps of space to run around in it and get past each other when the ball went past. But it was still fun.

I scored a goal!

We then headed back upstairs for the 3 hole golf competition. James was surprised to learn that Golf was an Olympic sport, but it was. The kids loved playing putt putt last lockdown so I'm glad that we pulled it out again this time. Eliza smashed it from the start getting a hole in one at the first hole. I think she surprised herself. Mummy also got a hole in one. Winner!

The 2nd hole was a bit trickier. I didn't think through the ball getting stuck under the table when I set it up. Ha. Daniel found that out the hard way and needed to snooker it out from under the table. We were flexible with the ball going into the hole and then bouncing out because it was tricky to have it stay in. We all had fun.

I loved Alexander excitement at getting it in the hole, even when it look a lot of goes

Gold - Eliza and Daddy (they drew their number of shots), Bronze - Mummy (photo by Alexander)

We then moved next-door for the weightlifting competition. Using the gold club the kids needed to show their lifting technique and got bonus points for the best facial expressions as they did it. James decided who did it best.

Gold - Daniel, Silver - Eliza, Bronze - Alexander

James then showed them how it is done. We loved it!

We finished off the events with the Equestrian. The kids needed to ride the reindeer around the house using different techniques as they galloped along.

Then it was Swans time. We enjoyed watching and cheering on the Sydney Swans in their game. We also enjoyed a sausage sandwich on the picnic blanket in the lounge room.

We then did the closing ceremony where we ate the Olympic Rings with a donut eating competition. It was actually quite fun to do. The kids had a lot of fun doing it, even though we ended up with lots of coloured icing on our faces. I was a bit proud of myself having this idea.

All up it was a wonderful day. It has recharged my batteries for the week ahead and filled my heart with having lots of fun together as a family. Eliza's favourite task was the gymnastics, Daniel's was bike riding and Alexander's was Discus. A great time around.

Lots of medals were won but the big winner was a fun family time.
