Today the kids broke up their lockdown weekend by doing an online art lesson. This was organised by the Preschool Parents' Club and I thought it was a great idea! For just $20 each the kids got to join the zoom class and were given all the equipment needed. I figured that because we haven't even been paying for 2 of Alexander's preschool days this year it is a fun way to support the preschool but also a fun activity for the kids when each day feels the same. It also leaves them with a fun memory from lockdown as they put their monster up in their room.
They started the zoom by drawing their monster. They stared with the monster's chin, then the head and then some teeth. They then chose if they wanted to draw a big body or a skinny one. Daniel chose to draw a big body and Eliza and Alexander chose to draw a skinny one. Then they added arms to their monster, like Olaf arms.

They then got to use paint. They had the primary colours as well as black and white. The teacher went through some ways of mixing colours to make a new one - blue and yellow makes green, blue and red makes purple, red and yellow makes orange.
They started with painting the body and Alexander decided he wanted to make green. They then painted the monster's chin. Alexander decided to copy Daniel who painted a pink spot on the chin. They then painted their face, horns and teeth. The bright colours look awesome. Alexander was hesitant about painting the teeth because when he drew them they were close together and he wasn't able to easily paint in between them. I showed him that he could make triangles as he painted so that would leave white space for his teeth. He was a bit unsure at first but then he was happy when he saw the finished piece.
They then did some paint brush blotches in the background and it looked great! Alexander did black and pink spots, Daniel did black and Eliza made purple and also used blue. They then finished their monsters by gluing on their 3 googley eyes. Alexander's eyes are cute because one looks like a nose.
I love that each monster is so unique. I love that they all had a lot of fun, even Daniel when it was aimed at 3-5 year olds. To be honest I think I would have enjoyed painting one too. When they were painting Alexander said 'This is so much fun! I love painting monsters'. It was really cute. Daniel shouted to me that he agrees and felt the same. Eliza kept giggling as she made her monster because she loved how it looked.

When they are dried I will draw over the teeth, outline the monsters and draw the arms with sharpies so they stand out more. Then we will need to find a place to put them up in their rooms.
