After our trip to the Van Gogh Alive experience, the kids were keen to do some more art so I decided that we'd have an art day. Because we had just learnt a lot about Van Gogh, we watched the story 'Katie and the Starry Night' being read to us.

We then went into the backroom and made starry night pictures. We spoke about the colours that Van Gogh used and why they would have been darker colours and then some yellow. We started by outlining the artwork and the details. Then the kids painted the sky and to make the swirls textured they used a fork in the white paint. Some turned out a bit better than others but they had a great time painting them.

Alexander had a blast painting with the fork!
And Eliza was taking her time doing her artwork but was loving it too.
We spoke about how Van Gogh filled his page with the colours, there weren't really white spaces. So the kids did their finishing touches and completed their own artworks of Starry Night.
The kids were very proud of their artworks and I was very proud of them too!
Next up was a challenge before lunch. We went and watched a video about Giuseppe Arcimboldo's food art paintings.

I then told the kids that their challenge to get their lunch was to make a face using their wooden kitchen food. The catch was that they had do to it together and they needed to work together - so listen to each other and be kind. I was really surprised with how well they did!
Here are the kids explaining their picture.
They then realised that they had removed the eyebrows so added them again for the final photo.

The last activity we did was looking at Pablo Picasso. Eliza had done some art like his at school and so she was really keen to do some more Pablo Picasso art. We watched a video about Picasso and cubism art.

Then they drew their own self portrait using cubism. They did a great job.

I do love that they all seem to love doing art. I do I love that I have embraced the mess. I love that the kids are enjoying learning about the artists that leads to their own creations. They are still asking to do Jackson Pollock again but I will see about that one. There was a bit too much paint for my liking with that one.
