This year, I have enjoyed being more involved with the Hornsby Berowra Eagles as coach. A couple of weeks ago, Caroline came to me asking if I’d be willing to participate in the Big Freeze which the club was putting on. The aim was to raise $500 for the club President, Steve, to get ice bucket challenged and then to have each coach get an ice bucket for $100. I told her if the team raised $200 I’d do it. She was up for the challenge and so were my team. Between the team and my family, they raised over $500 for me to do it, and the club raised a massive $4000 to go towards the fight against Motor Neurone Disease. What a great effort.
In the lead up, Dad bought me a MND beanie to wear which was perfect. I’ve wanted one for a while.
The night of it the family came as well as Mum and Dad to cheer me on. Pulling up we saw a little pool, a ute and a kids slide. I didn’t sign up for this. I signed up for a bucket over my head. Oh dear. They filled the pool with water and lots of bags of ice. To make it even colder, the temperature was around 7 degrees too, one of the colder nights we had had.
We had some photos taken, Steve did an interview and then went first. Face first. Impressive. Other guys went next - some sliding forward, some jumping in, some sliding face first. Brent went before me and ran and did a bomb into the water. The crowd loved it! I was next and everyone chanted ‘belly flop’. No deal. High nerves, anxious that my hips wouldn’t fit in the slide. I climbed up and then went to go down. As expected, my hips didn’t fit, it wasn’t a graceful slide down but I made it, and kept my head above the water. I wasn’t too keen to get my whole self in the water as I didn’t want to get sick from being cold. It was freezing in the water, and freezing out of it. I hopped out, had a photo looking cold, and then went and got changed. I had a few layers to put on to try and warm myself up.
