Iso Kids Games

With Covid flaring up again, Kids Games had to be moved to the September school holidays. This meant that we had 3 days at home with nothing organised (well really, many more than 3 days because we're in lockdown again, but those 3 days were all organised and now weren't). So I decided that I would come up with an Isolation Kids Games. I tossed up different Bible Stories and themes that we could do and ended up asking the kids what their favourite Bible Stories were to base each day around.

Eliza chose Creation

Daniel chose Daniel and the Lion's Den

Alexander chose David and Goliath.

The programs were made with some songs, a lesson on the Bible Story, some discussion questions, a memory verse and then different activities for the electives - Drama, Dance, Science, Sport/Games, Art and Cooking. Each day we did some sport and dance because they were the electives that Eliza and Daniel chose initially. I loved how excited and into the activities the kids were.

Here is a breakdown of each day.

Reality

The day was great. The kids got into the songs and the actions, listened to the Bible Story and had some great answers with the discussion questions. The memory verse was done a few times by finding the words and putting them together (which had tears because Daniel found most of the words and Alexander was upset about that but we worked through that) and then through saying it in different ways.

Working on the memory verse

We then did the dance a couple of times. Daniel asked if he had to join in and I said it would be good to. I'm proud of him for getting up and joining in, even though it isn't cool and his first choice.

I introduced the kids to Around The World in basketball. They had a great time and surprised themselves with getting the ball into the hoop. Eliza in particular started saying 'I can't do it' but managed to get a lot in. Alexander found the shots from further back a bit tricky but he kept trying and kept a good attitude through it which was great.

The Would You Rather brain breaks were awesome! The kids loved picking their favourite topic and then have to do the exercise for that side. I got into it too which was fun to join in with them. We then did a lot of other Would You Rather games - not just the Earth one.

Then our cooking took up most of the day. I introduced them to fondue and they loved dipping banana into the chocolate to represent day and night. It will need to be a Tuesday Fun Night activity one time I think.

We made jelly for the sky with marshmallows on top of the jelly to help the sky and water being seperate. They got to enjoy it on Thursday.

Land and plants had the kids be creative with fruit and veggies on their plate, making a garden picture.

Sun, Moon and Stars used crackers, cheese and cookie cutters.

But the fish of the sea and birds of the air were my favourite. We made fish biscuits using a milk arrowroot biscuit, icing, m&m's, lolly bananas and lolly eyes. They looked really cute and were very tasty.

Fish

Giving the fish a kiss like Rex Hunt

We didn't have time to make the animal sandwiches, because the food was all for afternoon tea. It was a great way for the kids to remember what was made each day. We kept repeating what was made day 1, 2, 3 etc.

We then went for a walk/bike ride in God's awesome creation which was lots of fun.

A successful first day of Kids Games.

Reality

We ended up doing this day on Friday because on Thursday the kids had a play at the park and a bike ride in the afternoon with Lachie, Ems and Flynnie so we moved it a day back. It was another success.

The kids loved trying to remember the memory verse by taking away words - starting with one, then 2, then 3, etc until there was only 1 word left on the table.

We then had a lot of fun doing the different dances. It was a great workout. They also wanted to do a couple of the Would you rather activities too so we did a few more of them.

Next up we acted out the Bible Story. The kids had lots of fun. Daniel was Daniel, Eliza was the teachers of the law and a lion and Alexander was the king and the lions. They were very cute acting it out.

We then did charades and the kids did a great job of acting out the different animals.

Next up we played some games. It was a rainy day so we couldn't be outside as I had planned but we worked with what we had inside. We did a lion hunt and the kids did well with finding it. We then had fun doing pin the tail on the lion. They got pretty close to the tail spot each time they tried.

And then we tried catch the lion's tail, but it was a bit too hard doing it inside, Eliza ended up hurt by bumping into the wall so we stopped that game and did some would you rather activities instead.

For lunch they had lion plates (which they initially thought were suns, but then worked out the theme.

Then the kids did science where they made the lion's mane using Skittles Science. It was really cool to see their reactions as the colour moved.

We finished the day with drawing their own lion using Art for Kids Hub.

They had so much fun doing that drawing, Eliza asked to draw a penguin and then Daniel wanted to draw a pokeball. They did a great job with their drawings!

Another successful day remember that God is with us in the hard times.

Friday – David and Goliath

PLAN

Trampoline/Jumping Castle

Songs –

-Remember the Lord – Colin Buchanan

-The chooky and her chickies – Colin Buchanan

-My God is So Big – Colin Buchanan

God is the Biggest of All – Colin Buchanan https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=syRf_YRTTt0

Bible Story – David and Goliath https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7zLAcUZkxHA

Discussion questions:

1.     What was David’s job?

2.     Why was everyone afraid in Saul’s army?

3.     Why was David so confident that he could defeat Goliath?

4.     What did Goliath think when he saw David? Why did he think this?

5.     Who won the battle? Why?

6.     David believed that he could defeat Goliath with God on his side? What is something that you need God on your side for to beat? Is there anything you are afraid of?

7.     What does David and Goliath teach us about God?

Memory Verse

Leave all your worries with God, because he cares for you. 1 Peter 5:7

Memory Verse Games (choose 1 or 2 activities to do)

The kids could say the memory verse without any games

Electives

Drama

-       Act out the Bible Story, David and Goliath

o   You can do this by reading out 1 Samuel 17

Games/Sport

-       Head to an oval. Try and kick the ball through a goal. Make a smaller target and try and hit it

-       AFL – handball at a target

-       Goliath, King, David – kids stand opposite each other. Count down from 3. When you get to 0 kids need to make a pose (Giant – stand tall, King - stand with hands on head like a crown, David – crouch down). Giant beats King, King beats David, David beats Goliath. If you win you need to try and tip the other people.

Dance

-       You can be brave and strong https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_rQKCduq_2M

Science

-       Design a sling shot https://pbskids.org/designsquad/build/indoor-slingshot/

or https://biblegamescentral.com/defeat-the-giant/

Art

-       Rock art – write the memory verse on rocks

-       Decorate rocks

-       Make a pouch to hold stones in

o    Cut a piece of brown felt in a circle. Use a hole punch and space the holes about 2 inches apart around the circle.

o   Use a piece of string to sew up the pouch (put tape on the end of the string so it can go through the holes easier)

o   Use scrunched up paper (or marshmallows) in the pouch as stones. Throw them at a goliath (either Mum or Dad or a paper cut out). Each time it hits Goliath on the head, you get to eat the marshmallow.

-       Use recycled materials to make armour like what Goliath wore.

Cooking

-       Make rock cakes https://www.taste.com.au/recipes/rock-cakes/4cbe6f14-5400-41ea-a103-5810822f4d06

Reality

Monday we started with the story of David and Goliath. We sang our songs and listened to the Bible Story and had another great discussion about it. I loved that the memory verse was remembered by each of the kids, without any prompting.

We did Eliza's dance elective and then did some more 'would you rather' activities.

We did some David and Goliath target practice in the hallway using Daniel's grip ball game. One kid was Goliath and held the grip ball bat in front of their head and the other 2 were David who threw (well, slung) the stone (ball) to hit Goliath's head. The kids had a blast trying to hit each other.

Next up was science. I ended up making the sling shots because it was tricky putting the balloon over the end of it. But it worked really well with the little marshmallows (which we have 3 missing somewhere in our house). I gave the kids 5 marshmallows (because David had 5 stones) and they had to use their marshmallows to knock down Goliath. It took them a few goes to hit it but they each were able to do it. They had a blast! Daniel and Alexander played it for an hour. The giggles and cheering was very sweet to hear.

In the afternoon the kids asked to have the jumping castle set up for them to play on. I had planned to have it set up each morning but the grass was wet so I didn't get around to it. They loved having it set up for them to play on!

For afternoon tea I made the rock cakes while the kids played on the jumping castle (just easier than them making them too) and we enjoyed eating them as we walked up to the oval in the afternoon. It was fun having the time with Daddy too. The kids enjoyed kicking the AFL ball and the green ball around and running around on the oval.

We finished the time by playing Goliath, King David which gave us lots of giggles, and a good run. We did play parents verses kids and then Daniel and Alexander verse Eliza and Daddy. Basically in the game, it's like Giants, Wizards, Dwarfs. Goliath beats the king, the king beats David and David beats Goliath. For Goliath you stand tall, for the king you make a crown on your head and for David you crouch down. If you won the battle you had to run to tip the other team. If you tipped them you won. We didn't keep track of the score though which was good. We played it for fun.

Another successful Iso kids games.

It was nice getting messages from Cathy saying that they had a fun time doing kids games too, and Carol mentioned that a few other families were doing it too. I'm glad it provided some fun for families during this tricky time. Hopefully next holidays we are able to do the real Kids Games.
