At 6:30 James, Daniel and I hopped into the car and headed to the SAN hospital to prepare for his operation. We had previously spoken to him about how Dr Naidoo is going to help fix his nose and his ears so that he won't have as much pain and how he'd go to the hospital for his operation. We mentioned that he would be asleep for a while and then he'd wake up and it might hurt a little bit but we'd be there and look after him. I don't think he had really grasped the operation and I didn't want to push it.
We got admitted and then headed up to the Children's Ward. There on the seat was a little knitted teddy. He decided that the teddy would be called Daniel.
After a short wait he was called. They gave him panadol and then we dressed him into his gown.
Then he hopped onto the bed and was wheeled down to the waiting room for the operation. We were able to sit with him for this time. We put on the tv and he got to watch some of Postman Pat and then Octanoughts.
The anaesthetist came and spoke to us about the procedure. He said that to help Daniel go under they would use gas. They'd give me a gas mask to put on him and just slowly up the amount so that it is a calming thing. If he started to stress out then they would up the gas quickly and he'd be out in a few seconds. Then I'd head out and see him in recovery when he came to.
After a little more time the nurse came and gave me an outfit to wear into the room with Daniel.
James gave him a hug and a kiss and then we headed into the room outside the operating theatre.
The nurse came back and said for me to carry him into the operating room. We popped him on the bed, put a blanket on him because he was feeling cold (so was his back because he was in a gown). The anaesthetist then put the gas mask on my face to show Daniel what was going to happen. Then he had me put it on his face. Daniel was so good, just breathed into it, no resistance. He then started to nod, like you do when you are drifting off to sleep but trying to stay awake. The anaesthetist then took the mask and asked me to hold his hands so he wouldn't reach up and grab the mask. He was fine with that which was good. He then told me to give him a kiss because he was almost under the general and to then head out.
James and I then waiting in the waiting room, chatted with some other parents waiting for their kids, messages family.
After around 35mins, at about 9am, the nurse came and said that he was waking up and for me to go through. On the way the nurse said that he asked for me so I was glad that we had planned it that way. When I walked in Daniel was lying on the bed, a bit upset and quite out of it. They said that I could pick him up and hold him so I did that. They brought over an icy pole for him if he felt like it. He had a couple of bites of it and then had a bit of a cry. He was asking for Daddy but kept cuddling me. I told him that we'd see daddy soon and he could just cuddle and try to sleep. He settled after a couple of minutes and then fell asleep on me.
The nurse kept coming back to check his blood pressure which was good. After waking around 3 times, having a cry, asking for daddy, asking for mummy, he'd then put his head back on my chest and fall back asleep.
Once given the all clear we both got onto the bed and were pushed back up to the children's ward where James was waiting. Daniel wanted to still have cuddles with me so I lifted him up and we sat on the chair together. He got upset again but then fell back to sleep on me. He kept dosing on and off but did settle down which is good.
He asked for another icy pole so we got one from the nurse and once it softened he had around half of it and lots of sips of water. Very good! He was also more like himself.
At around 10:15 they got him some food and Daniel had some cuddles with Daddy. He had a tiny amount of jelly, but didn't seem too keen on it. He then happily had a vegemite sandwich. Clever boy! He has enjoyed sitting and watching ABC kids which has been a great distraction for him. And then he slowly had his icecream.
Dr Naidoo came to check on Daniel. He said the operation went really well and that he had very large adenoids and that his nose was very blocked so it was good that he had the operation.
At 12:45 we dressed Daniel back into his clothes and he had some juice. The nurse took the cannula out of Daniel's hand (which hurt with the sticky tape holding it on) then said that we could head home at 1. He had a quick play in the kids play area while James went to get the car then we headed to the carpark and came home.
Mum was amazing with looking after Eliza and Alexander and both kids were great for her. Alexander took the bottle well which was good to hear. I really needed to express when we got home. Alexander had some of a bottle, and then one side from me. I then expressed both sides and got 100mL. That's what happens after going 7hours without feeding him. I'm so glad that he has taken the bottle so well.
Daniel watched some Play School during nap time and then had a little bit of a quiet play in his room. He then came out and enjoyed some ice cream. He then spent most of the afternoon snuggled up on the couch being very quiet. He had a few bites of a sandwich at dinner time and then headed to bed, pretty exhausted.
He has done so very well today. He handled the general really well, being in a different place really well, coming out of the general really well, having cuddles really well, feeling sore really well. It has been hard seeing him so out of it most of today. It has been hard seeing him in pain and not being able to do anything but hold him and say he's ok. It has been hard to just see him out of sorts. I know he will get better and quickly but today has been quite emotionally taxing on me too as well as mentally draining. I hope he recovers quickly. They have said that he needs to take it easy for a week to 2 weeks because the adenoids can start bleeding again. He isn't to go to preschool on Monday or Tuesday and no swimming on Wednesday. This is going to make for a long week I think. I don't quite know how I'm going to keep him occupied and not too active for the week. But I'm sure it will be ok.
I'm just glad that the operation went well and that he was so brave. Love my little man. So glad that both James and I were able to be there for him. So glad that he didn't get his tonsils out as well.
